“It was also great to have the option to hang and break bread, and have a few laughs,” the actor expounded on meeting with Smith for the screening.
Foxx’s manager Brown also praised Smith’s new film on Instagram, writing on Tuesday that the actor’s performance is “incredible.”

“Everyone should see this film!!!!!!!” Brown wrote in his post’s caption. Foxx is not the principal superstar to take in a private screening of Emancipation, which marks Smith’s most memorable film since his incident at the Oscars in March when he slapped Chris Rock onstage in front of a live audience.
Last Monday, Smith shared a pair of photographs on Instagram from a private screening featuring Dave Chappelle, Tyler Perry, Rihanna, A$AP Rough, Kenya Barris and more. He wrote in the caption, “Amazing evening!! Thanx for coming to see #Emancipation. Trust ya’ll appreciated!!”
In the remarks section, Barris expressed, “This night was MAGIC and your film is genuinely something that will last forever!” In Emancipation, set in Louisiana during the American Nationwide conflict and coordinated by Antoine Fuqua (Training Day), Smith plays Peter, a man who escapes slavery and sets out on a mission for opportunity. “The film is inspired by the 1863 photographs of ‘Whipped Peter,’ taken during a Union Army medical examination, that originally appeared in Harper’s Week by week,” an official synopsis for the film reads.
“One image, known as ‘The Scourged Back,’ which shows Peter’s bare back mutilated by a whipping conveyed by his enslavers, ultimately contributed to growing public opposition to slavery.”
“All through my career, I’ve turned down many movies that were set in slavery,” Smith said at an early October screening of the film facilitated by Apple and the NAACP, per The Hollywood Journalist. “I never wanted to show us like that. And then this image came along. And this is not a film about slavery.
This is a film about opportunity. This is a film about versatility. This is a film about faith.”

“This is a film about the heart of a man — what could be called the principal viral image,” Smith added. “Cameras had quite recently been created, and the image of whipped Peter circumvented the world.” Smith then called the photograph a “rallying cry against slavery,” and one that inspired a film that he says he wanted to be part of in “a way that only Antoine Fuqua could convey.”
Smith — who left the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and was banned from attending its ceremonies for the following 10 years — said in a video earlier this late spring that he has been doing “a ton of thinking and personal work” in the months since smacking Rock at the Oscars. Emancipation is in theaters Dec. 2 and streaming on Apple TV+ Dec. 9.
